The chimney is commonly found in older, historic brick homes and buildings which were constructed over a century ago in the northeast. While newer heating and ventilation methods have been developed over the years, many homeowners in New Jersey still use their chimney to keep themselves warm during winter. However, due to the age of the homes in which these devices have been installed; chimneys should be occasionally inspected to determine if they are in need of repair.
What Is Chimney Repair?
Chimney repair is a specialized skill that involves the fixing or restoration of a chimney that has become damaged or worn out. Although chimneys are almost always made out of brick, which is a tough, durable, time tested material, eventually it will be subject to wear which will require inspection and intervention.
When Do You Need Chimney Repair in New Jersey?
- When the chimney crown becomes cracked: The chimney crown is responsible for protecting the interior of the home against the elements, and if it becomes cracked its ability to do this will become compromised. A cracked crown will allow water to enter and once it freezes and then thaws the crack will expand. Contractors will usually correct the problem by repairing the crack and ensuring the crown is waterproof.
- When the mortar joints become damaged: This is a serious issue that should be repaired as soon as possible. Mortar joints are what holds the chimney together and if they fail the bricks will be exposed to greater moisture which can lead to expansion that can ultimately result in the entire chimney collapsing. Given the fact the chimney is typically the heaviest part of a brick home this presents an extreme danger to anyone near or around the property if it happens.
- When wallpaper near the chimney is damaged: If you notice that wallpaper in close proximity to the chimney is damaged, this means too much moisture is present. There are a number of things which could cause it, but regardless you should contact a contractor immediately.
- You see spalling bricks: Spalling is a phenomenon where water will get inside brick, concrete or stone and then force the masonry surface to peel or pop off. It is easy to spot as small pieces of masonry will usually fall off the chimney. If the spalling is allowed to continue ultimately the entire structure could come down.
