Your roof is one of the most important features of your home. Not only is it your first line of defense against bad weather, but it provides your home with additional insulation and a good-looking roof improves the street value and appearance of your entire home.
That’s why it is so important to make sure you are hiring a professional, experienced roofing contractor when it is time to repair or replace your roof. There are some important questions to ask before choosing a roofing contractor and we are going to share a few with you.
Do you have a contractor license?
This seems like a no-brainer, but many people forget to ask this very important question. You should always verify whether or not a license is required in your area, and whether or not your contractor is licensed. Licensed contractors have taken tests or proven their qualifications to be a roofer. Using an unlicensed contractor could result in damage to your property, an improperly installed roof, and other issues that you do not want to deal with.
Note: A business license is not the same as a roofing contractor license. Make sure you know the difference!
Do you have references?
A good roofer should always have references for you to contact, before and after photos of roofing projects and customer testimonials, especially if they are claiming to have years of experience in the roofing industry. It should be a red flag if a roofer cannot provide you with a single project photo or customer review of their work. Make sure that the contractor you have chosen is someone who can provide you with examples of roofing jobs they have completed, so that you can be sure they are the right contractor to take care of your roof.
Do you offer any sort of warranty or guarantee?
Many roofing products come with their own warranty, and a typical workmanship warranty lasts for a year. Remember – material warranties and workmanship warranties are two different things, so you want to make sure that your contractor covers both and get the specifics for each. A contractor who does not provide any sort of warranty or guarantee may not be someone you want to work with.
Will you respect my property?
When looking for a roofing contractor to repair or replace your roof, it is important to remember that your landscaping could potentially be impacted as well. You want to work with a contractor that will take care to protect your property and dispose of your old roof properly, with minimal impact to your home’s overall appearance.
Do you provide a contract and written estimate?
This is a hugely important question. If you sign a contract without a detailed estimate, you run the risk of paying more than you bargained for. You also want to make sure that the contract itself will be detailed, so that you know exactly what your roofing contractor will be doing for you. We advise against working with any roofer who will not provide you with a detailed written estimate or contract. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
